Elizabeth Garber will have a reading and conversation about her memoir, Sailing at the Edge of Disaster: A Memoir of a Young Girl’s Daring Year, at the Sedgewick Village Library.

Elizabeth will give a presentation with photos from her memoir, Sailing at the Edge of Disaster, the story of her year at sea in 1971 that ended with being held hostage in Panama.

Elizabeth Garber’s book Sailing at the Edge of Disaster: A Memoir of a Young Woman’s Daring Year is a finalist for a Maine Literary Award from the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance. Congratulations Elizabeth!

The awards ceremony is being held at Bates College at the Olin Arts Center in Lewiston, Maine this Thursday May 18 at 7PM. You can still RSVP to be there in person, or to be there by Zoom!

Elizabeth will be reading from her newest memoir Sailing at the Edge of Disaster at the Blue Hill Library. Linda Buckmaster will also be reading from her newest book Elemental. This event is in conjunction with Blue Hill Books.

Elizabeth will be hosted by the Colonial Theatre in Belfast to show a Book Trailer for Sailing at the Edge of Disaster made by Camden film maker David Berez, as well as a slide show of images from her year at sea in the early 1970s.

Elizabeth Garber and Laura Bonazzoli will be selling and signing copies of their books at the Belfast Art Market this Friday.

The 11 linked short stories in Laura Bonazzoli’s debut collection, Consecration Pond, takes place on the shores of a pond in rural Maine. Among the narrators are a burn victim begs her husband’s ghost for forgiveness for failing to save him, a retired teacher counsels a reporter seeking easy answers to the cause of his neighbor’s death, and a boy whose self-imposed rite of passage nearly costs him his life. Together, the stories offer a meditation on the nature of wisdom, the risks and gifts of allowing ourselves to be seen, and the challenge of creating meaning in the wake of loss.

Elizabeth Garber’s Sailing at the Edge of Disaster: A memoir of a young woman’s daring year is the story of how a bookish teen and her younger brother are sent by their domineering father to “shape up” on a sail-training school ship, where they discover the rigors, joys, and triumphs of being at sea. As they scour the decks, learn to splice ratlines, and climb the rigging, they also survive an act of piracy, a near-sinking, and being held hostage by armed gunboats. The book chronicles a transformative year in the throes of late adolescence that leads to courage, grace, and a reclamation of selfhood.
