From Research to Writing—A Live Zoom Event with MWPA

A Presentation from Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance

With Elizabeth Garber, Julia Bouwsma, and Linda Buckmaster.

Join three Maine authors as they describe their experiences researching for their recent books and using the material in their writing. Maine Poet Laureate Julia Bouwsma, memoirist Elizabeth Garber, and prose writer and poet Linda Buckmaster will talk about family documents and objects, interviewing participants, tapping into personal experience, ephemera, museums, serendipity, and of course, books. They’ll touch on issues of copyright and permissions, incorporating imagery, and book design. An important concern is how to choose the relevant material to use from an excess of information.

PLEASE NOTE This talk will occur online via Zoom. Attendees do not need to create an account to participate, but should test out Zoom before the presentation if they are first-time users. The presenter and MWPA staff will not have the capacity to help attendees with tech issues during the talk.

This talk is free for MWPA members and $5 for nonmembers.

Susan Conley in Conversation with Elizabeth Garber about her new book Sailing at the Edge of Disaster: A Memoir of a Young Woman’s Daring Year at Print: A Bookstore in Portland, Maine.

“This book is a beautiful, high-stakes coming-of-age tale about survival on an old square-sailed rigger. It’s also a vivid, stirring reminder that again and again the natural world will reduce us to our most elemental selves and allow us to finally see and know who we are.”

Susan Conley, author of the New York Times Editor’s Choice Landslide and the memoir, The Foremost Good Fortune

Book Reading in Bayside with Elizabeth Garber and Laura Bonazzoli

Toad Hall Editions authors Elizabeth Garber and Laura Bonazzoli will read from their forthcoming books.

The 11 linked short stories in Laura Bonazzoli’s debut collection, Consecration Pond, takes place on the shores of a pond in rural Maine. Among the narrators are a burn victim begs her husband’s ghost for forgiveness for failing to save him, a retired teacher counsels a reporter seeking easy answers to the cause of his neighbor’s death, and a boy whose self-imposed rite of passage nearly costs him his life. Together, the stories offer a meditation on the nature of wisdom, the risks and gifts of allowing ourselves to be seen, and the challenge of creating meaning in the wake of loss.

Elizabeth Garber’s Sailing at the Edge of Disaster: A memoir of a young woman’s daring year is the story of how a bookish teen and her younger brother are sent by their domineering father to “shape up” on a sail-training school ship, where they discover the rigors, joys, and triumphs of being at sea. As they scour the decks, learn to splice ratlines, and climb the rigging, they also survive an act of piracy, a near-sinking, and being held hostage by armed gunboats. The book chronicles a transformative year in the throes of late adolescence that leads to courage, grace, and a reclamation of selfhood.

Elizabeth and Laura will be joined by Belfast author Linda Buckmaster. The event is free, all ages welcome. Sponsored by Bayside Arts.
